A new restaurant in Edwardsville opened this summer, going by the name of “Spoonful.” This Korean desert restaurant is a family-owned chain, having one location in St. Louis, MO, and one in Edwardsville. According to the “About Me” section on their website, “Spoonful opened with the goal of introducing Korean café culture to St. Louis, MO. Before launching Spoonful, founder Monica Lee worked in the corporate world in Asia and regularly traveled throughout Asia and Europe.”
Spoonful serves many frozen Korean desserts. The reviews are highly positive: 4.9 stars. Ausaja Kazmi says, “Their bingsu is exceptional, with finely shaved ice that melts in your mouth, topped with fresh, vibrant flavors. It’s a perfect balance of sweet and refreshing. The bubble tea was another highlight – rich in flavor with the right amount of sweetness, and the tapioca pearls were just the right texture.”. Ashley, A local guide, says, “The Taiyaki is so good, the red bean is my favorite! They reheat well from the fridge in a toaster oven too.”.
But sometimes, reviews can lie. Which is why I decided to go there myself and see if it is really that good. Spoonful is located inside a small strip mall, the same one where the popular comic store, “Heroic Adventures” is located.
Upon entering, the café gives off very “Lofi-Coffee-Shop” vibes. The only part of the café that breaks that vibe is the Korean food restaurant. Both restaurants share the same room, which is a little odd. The Korean food restaurant is named “Pokemunch”.
As for ordering, there is a kiosk, or you can order at the counter. Regardless of what you choose, there are plenty of options to choose from. I ordered the “Taiyaki”, Nutella filled. As a drink, I ordered the “Strawberry Boba.” A neat addition to their wide range of Boba selection; with each drink, you can choose a sweetness level. 100% is very sweet, so I chose a 50% sweetness level, which is the right range for me.
The customer service is amazing, with all the workers being very friendly. Once you complete your order, you are given a beeper. Once your food is ready, the beeper beeps, and you can collect your food. (you have to return the beeper of course!
The food is great, along with the ambience and the customer service. If you’re looking for anywhere to eat a sweet treat, stop by Spoonful, one of the best Korean desert cafés in Edwardsville.
