According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 45 percent of schools in the U.S reported providing computers for students, Liberty Middle School being one of them. But are they really helping students learn or are they hurting learning? I interviewed four people to tell you about their experience with computers in Liberty and what they think about this change.
The first question I asked was, “What is the best things about computers in schools?” An anonymous student from Liberty said, “They give access to a lot of information that is useful to the student.” Mrs. Melissa Edwards, Liberty Middle School principal, said, “I love all of the possibilities that it gives you all.”
On the other side of things, I asked “What is your least favorite things about computers?” A student from Liberty said, “Computer problems are something that happens a lot and that effects learning.” Mrs. Edwards says, “I do not like the amount of time in front of your face.” A parent of a student at Liberty says that they do not like that taxpayer dollars are going toward broken and new computers.
The last question that I asked them was, should computers stay at Liberty Middle School, or should they go? There was a lot of interesting points on both sides, with some being better than others but in the end most of the people that were interviewed thought that computers should stay, however, everyone agreed that we have a long way to go to perfect computers in schools.
