Liberty middle school has been using Houses to organize students for fun activities since 2021. They even include dens which split up the houses for different responsibilities. Just this year they changed the schedule of the dens, so the question remains: Do the students still enjoy it or are they losing interest because of the schedule change?
During the 2023-2024 school year students would have dens at the end of the day about once a month on Fridays. To have enough time for these activities they would follow the Liberty Wednesday schedule, this means the class periods are now 39 minutes long. Would students rather have a shortened schedule with a whole hour of dens, or have dens for only 25 minutes?
I went around the school and asked 15 students and teachers if they preferred last year’s dens or the new dens. 9 of them voted for the new dens and the other 6 voted for the old dens. Overall, they like new dens because the faster schedule makes students more focused, organized, and productive. The people who said they had liked last year’s dens said it was because of the overall shortened schedule for the other classes in the day.
Overall, it seems that the new dens are better for the Liberty students, teachers, and staff. It gives just the right amount of time for students to work and be productive without getting bored.
