Liberty Middle School has a new teacher! She was a journalist, a Legal Secretary, a substitute, a teacher’s aide, and now she teaches 6th grade Language Arts. Welcome Ms. Sigafoos to Liberty Middle School!
Growing up in Staunton, Ms. Sigafoos went to SIU Carbondale. While in Carbondale, she worked for her local newspaper, Staunton Star Times. After spending two years at SIU Carbondale, she went to McKendree University where she got her bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Writing. Following graduation, she focused on working with the Staunton Star Times. She spent a bit of time working for her newspaper before she retired from the newspaper to focus on her kids at home.
People always told Ms. Sigafoos that she would make a good teacher. Despite her disagreeing with that, she became a substitute. She loved being a substitute, so she decided to get her education degree and became a teacher aide for a year. After getting her education degree, she became a 7th grade social studies teacher at Greenville Junior High. She worked there for multiple years before coming to the Edwardsville school district where she now teaches 6th grade Language Arts here in Liberty!
She said that she loves teaching LA, more than she expected to, and loves it in Liberty Middle School. She loves the team she is on, the elective she teaches, the curriculum she teaches, the staff, and the environment of Liberty Middle School. After being asked what her favorite thing about being a teacher was, she said, “My favorite thing about being a teacher is when a student struggles…then makes progress and feels proud about themselves [and that] is the best thing.”
